Answer:

Welcome to NEO TOKYO BLOG!

We recently received some great questions from a reader about visiting Japan from India.

Here’s a helpful guide based on those questions, which we hope will assist many more of you planning your adventure!

Visa Information for Indian Citizens

Currently, Japan does not offer a visa on arrival for Indian nationals.

However, Indian nationals can apply online for an eVISA for short-term stays.

With this eVISA (or a standard tourist visa), you can typically stay for up to 90 days.

You can apply through an accredited travel agent or, for certain applicants, directly via the JAPAN eVISA website up to three months before your intended travel date.

Best Cities & Itinerary for a First-Time Visitor

For a first-time visit, we recommend a classic route covering these three iconic cities.

A 7 to 10-day trip is a good duration to experience the highlights without feeling too rushed.

  • Tokyo: A hub for modern architecture, endless shopping, and world-class entertainment. Don’t miss Shibuya Crossing and Senso-ji Temple.
  • Kyoto: The former imperial capital, known for its beautiful traditional temples, shrines, and geisha districts like Gion.
  • Osaka: Famous for its vibrant nightlife, delicious street food like takoyaki, and the iconic Dotonbori district.

How to Travel Smart & Save Money

Here are our top tips for a budget-friendly trip.

1. Transportation: Get a Japan Rail Pass

If you’re traveling between cities like Tokyo and Kyoto, the Japan Rail Pass (JR Pass) is essential.

It offers unlimited rides on most JR trains, including many Shinkansen lines, saving you a significant amount of money and hassle.

2. Accommodation: Book Smart

For budget-friendly stays, consider guesthouses, hostels, or capsule hotels.

Booking platforms allow you to compare prices and find the best deals for your travel dates.

3. Food & Sightseeing

  • Food: Convenience store meals are surprisingly high-quality and affordable. Also, look for “teishoku” (set lunches) at restaurants.
  • Attractions: Many temples, shrines, and parks are free to enter. Plan a mix of paid and free spots to manage your budget.

We hope this guide helps you plan an incredible and budget-friendly trip to Japan!
